I don't know. As you pointed out, not just anyone could have done it. So I wouldn't rule it out yet.

[ a slight shrug. ]

In each of those last two cases, it seems that a pair was unwillingly chosen because there was no one with an intent to kill. If we had two completely separate murders in this case, then it stands to reason that they should have both been planned. Otherwise there would have been no need for another pair to awaken.

...But that's assuming there really is any consistent logic to any of this.

I'd be surprised if there was any actual logic to any of this. Where'd you hear that, anyway? About the killing intent. From what I've gathered, no one at the helm of this shitshow even wants us to be doing any murder.

[Though he's not fully sold on that...]

The first two weeks, that was how it worked, to the best of our knowledge. Unless some of us are keeping secrets, only Mr. Barnes and the former Mr. Hunter awakened during the night that first Thursday, and only Miss Four and Miss Yoshimura the week after that. There was no reason to believe it was random.

[nascens]

[He hums, seeming to turn this information over in his head for a few seconds before raising his shoulders.]

People could very well be keeping secrets, but I doubt it. Do you think this place is set up like that intentionally, then? That the systems in place encourage killing intent, rather than it being a reaction to people who wanted to kill?

[teufelshund]

I think it's quite possible. They do have an entire island built just for trials and executions, after all. They can say they just created everything on the fly in response to that first murder, but there's nothing to back that up... though admittedly there's not much solid evidence to the contrary, either.

[nascens]

[He makes a little bit of a face, brow furrowed and expression somewhat sour.]

I'd like to think that those personal demons don't get paid enough to lie so vehemently about something like this, but it wouldn't be the first time if I was proven wrong.

Well, I don't know how much they really know. They might think the lies they're giving us are less consequential than they are.

Anyway, this is all just theory.

[nascens]

A good theory to keep in mind, even so. It's not like any of us have anything to go off of but someone else's word... No matter how far back in the food chain that word comes from.

[The vibe is back to Irritated, and he drops his hand again, letting it rest over his knees.]

I discussed my suspicions on this subject with Chandra a few times. A part of me almost wonders if he didn't somehow arrange this himself in order to get more information directly from the other side, though I'd like to think he would prepare better for such a possibility and establish some communication guidelines with the rest of us ahead of time.

[ he sighs and shakes his head, looking into the fire. ]

We'll find out tomorrow, I suppose.

[nascens]

I'd think he would have the foresight to communicate extensively if it was something that he himself set up... But you're right about that.

[He also turns his attention back toward the fire, though he doesn't really seem to be looking at it.]

Frustrating, having to play by their timelines. Things getting done when they want them done, not a moment sooner.

[ there's a bit of a chuckle at that, though there's not much mirth in it. ]

That, especially. Time is supposed to be my thing.

[nascens]

[Shifting yet again, now to rest his chin on his knees as he looks over toward Mephisto and back away from the fire.]

Hm. What are you, anyway? Another god?

[WHY ARE THERE SO MANY GODS IN HELL.]

Practically speaking, we're not that far off, but most of us wouldn't usually identify ourselves as such. I'm one of the eight kings known as the Baal — the King of Time.

[nascens]

[THE REACTION HE HAS TO THIS NAME but at least it's not Beelzebul... Something about it definitely seems to ring familiar, but he keeps whatever that is to himself after a second.]

...The King of Time, huh. Hah. Every world seems to have its "eight kings".

[ he definitely notices there's a reaction, which is interesting, since that name didn't seem to mean anything to anyone else he mentioned it to... but he'll leave it alone for now. ]

Oh? Do I have a counterpart in yours?

[nascens]

[His brow furrows a little, but after a beat:]

We don't have eight kings, but we do have seven Archons. Gods who oversee each of the seven respective nations in my world.

[teufelshund]

Hm... That's interesting. We don't govern over specific regions or anything like that, just different aspects of nature. Most of the human world doesn't even know about us.

[nascens]

It sounds like it's like that in a few different worlds. I wonder if that ultimately makes things more or less complicated, though.
